For decades, parents and families have been an important part of the community surrounding the Minuteman Marching Band. The UMass Band Parents organization gives families a way to connect with one another while providing practical support for the band and its students.
By the early 2000s, the Band Parents had an established presence, with dedicated resources for sharing information with UMMB families. Over the years, parents have organized tailgates, supported band travel and performances, helped new families navigate the UMMB experience, and maintained traditions such as the annual Burger Burn surrounding the band’s appearance at MICCA.
Band Parents have also contributed to some of the UMMB’s most important efforts. Parents joined alumni in raising funds for the George N. Parks Minuteman Marching Band Building and have helped document the band through photographs and other materials that now form part of its historical record.
Today, the Band Parents continue to connect families with the life of the UMMB and with one another. Their role reflects something that has long distinguished the band: students may be the ones on the field, but the community surrounding them extends far beyond it.
